The performance of Aretha Franklin, at the Montreux Jazz Festival on June 12th, 1971 was the last live performance with the King Curtis and the Kingpins band that also recorded Aretha Franklin Live At The Filmore West. Billy Preston, Poncho Morales and the Memphis Horns were replaced with Truman Thomas, Warren Smith, Danny Moore, Martin Banks, and others. This was the way Aretha and King envisioned the music which took the studio versions up a notch, and not just in tempo.

-Montreux Jazz Festival 1971:
The Festival proposes an ample nine-day program with more than 300 musicians for its 5th edition. 1971 is the year that the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, comes to Montreux! The Casino stage also welcomes Hampton Hawes, Ahmad Jamal, Tony Williams, Max Roach, Family, Cat Stevens, Chico Hamilton, Slide Hampton and Roberta Flack, The Pebbles and Paul Bley. On 18 June, the evening concerts – with, notably, Larry Coryell, Chico Hamilton and Gato Barbieri – is one of the longest in Festival history since they continue through to breakfast on the following morning! On 21 June, Oliver Nelson & The Festival Big Band and The Quinnipiac College Ensemble are the last artists to perform at the Casino before it burns down in December during a Frank Zappa concert. An event that will leave an indelible mark on Montreux history: present in the hall that day, the Deep Purple group will tell the tale of the fire in its composition “Smoke on the Water”, destined to become a world-wide hit. The words of this song will also earn Claude Nobs his nickname of “Funky Claude”.
